FLYING BLIND
48" x 36"
OIL ON CANVAS
On a day during our first covid year, in isolation in Rawhide Canyon, Montana I found a hummingbird alive but crumpled on the deck outside our house. I lifted it onto a twig in the shade of a big fir tree and brought it sugar water every fifteen minutes for the entire day. Sometimes it drank deeply, sometimes not at all. It appeared to be improving. Then it slipped off of the the twig and died. In my isolation its infinitesimal death echoed in Rawhide Canyon. This tiny creature who traveled 3000 miles to live and to die here. "Flying Blind" gives this perfect bird new life, now it is a mask and a warrior's helmet made of jewels. "Flying Blind" is 48x36 inches, oil on canvas.
